foot
"The foot consists of toes, the metatarsus and the tarsus. The metatarsus is divided into the ball, sole, heel and back of the foot (instep). It consists of 26 bones, 27 joints, 32 muscles and tendons, 107 ligaments and 1,700 nerve endings. The foot has a longitudinal arch and a transverse arch. This means that the body weight is mainly supported by the three points of the heel, the metatarsophalangeal joint (ball of the big toe) and the metatarsophalangeal joint (ball of the little toe). The arch of the foot is tensed by the muscles and maintained by ligaments. The arches are very important for the proper functioning of the foot as they act as shock absorbers. The sole of the foot has a fatty body that absorbs shocks and has a cushioning effect, but is so stable that it cannot slip under the forces exerted when walking. The foot is the most stressed part of the body and carries people over 150,000 kilometers in the course of their lives."
